Many businesses are bewildered by how to use social media - much less get found on Google.  If you have a business that can benefit from reaching a large audience then there is no time to lose.  But how do you start getting potential customers to find and visit your site?  The answer is simple - get to the top of the Google search.   Many business will pay for this privilege by bidding for this spot - but you can do it "organically" and free.

First you must select a keyword phrase that is not so popular that you will never compete.   Ideally this should be tied to your brand and your unique value proposition.   I have a friend Kathy who is an Estate Planning Attorney - and she advertises this along with several other skills on her website.  She will never get found using this popular phrase because there is too much competition.    So Kathy has to start thinking like a customer - and start to understand what a customer actually types into a Google search.    She doesn't need to get found by a billion people - she just needs to carve out a small niche - and get part of the market.  By specializing her message - she will be able to capture a first position in Google.   While she advertises a long list of skills on her site - she really is a specialist at Estate Planning.   There are tools that you can use to explore keyword phrases - but we are just going to keep it simple.  She might start with the phrase "Santa Cruz Estate Planning Attorney" - which will attract locals.   As a refinement I might suggest that she change "Attorney" to "Lawyer" because people looking for attorneys dont enter the word "Attorney" as much as they might use "Lawyer".  So lets say she has selected "Santa Cruz Estate Planning Lawyer".  What now?

This is where the exercise comes in.  The exercise will be to write 10 blog posts about something pertinent to her profession and interesting to people.    And intersperse her new keyword phrase several times into the context of the posting with a link back to her website.  So we would have a link that has the phrase "Santa Cruz Estate Planning Lawyer" as the visible keywords.   When someone clicks on the link they will go to her site.

Creating these links is easy.  Your blog software should just allow you to highlight  the keyword phrase and then make it into a link.  Get someone to help you set up your blog if you dont have one.  Most hosting providers have easy set up of WordPress blogs that can be attached to your site.  But there are other easy solutions to get you going.

The blog postings can be short.  Just take 15 minutes and write down 10 easy topics that you could write about.  Dont try to promote your product.  Try to write a posting every day.   Just a few things to remember - create at catchy title,  start with an engaging sentence that sets up the rest of the post,  intersperse your keyword phrase, and enter some related tags associated with the posting.

This simple exercise doesnt guarantee traffic to your site - but it will add greatly to the possibility.   Be prepared engage your new customers when they arrive.
